I am taking on a Tarot music challenge to find songs that I feel match the spirit of each of the 78 cards in the Tarot deck. It’s a fun exercise because everyone has their unique spin on Tarot and song interpretation, so there are many possible combinations other than the ones I come up with!
For the Six of Cups, I chose “Winter” by Tori Amos. It’s a beautiful song about nostalgia, where the lyrics describe how winter reminds the narrator of playing in the snow, falling, and hearing the words of a loving father encouraging them to “…stand up/ For yourself ’cause I can’t always be around:”
He says, when you gonna make up your mind?
When you gonna love you as much as I do?
When you gonna make up your mind?
‘Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that I’ll always want you near
You say that things change, my dear
The lyrics go on to describe the narrator years later when they are growing up and discovering boys, and again, years later, when they are older and getting gray hair. Even so, through all of these stages, they continue to recall the words of their father and how his words made them feel. Through it all, the narrator always struggles to find self-acceptance and self-love.
What do you think of that song choice? What songs remind you of the Six of Cups?
