I am taking on a Tarot music challenge, following the lead of a person I met on social media. The idea is to find songs that match the spirit of each of the 78 cards in the Tarot. It’s interesting because each person has their unique spin on Tarot and song interpretation, so there are many possible combinations.
My musical taste tends toward R&B, pop, rap, and rock, with a slight alternative (and old school) slant.
For the Fool card, I chose “Crazy” by Seal. For me, the lyrics to this song speak to a person’s spiritual awakening, which is experienced as a freeing of the mind. In the first verse:
A man decides after 70 years
That what he goes there for is to unlock the door
While those around him criticize and sleepAnd through a fractal on a breaking wall
I see you my friend and touch your face again
Miracles will happen as we trip
While this may seem odd at face value, the chorus states:
But we’re never gonna survive unless we get a little crazy
Even so, most people are afraid to take that risk, as the song goes on the say in the bridge:
Oh darlin’, in a sky full of people, only some want to fly, isn’t that crazy?
In a world full of people, only some want to fly, isn’t that crazy, crazy?
In a heaven of people, there’s only some want to fly, isn’t that crazy?
I take this to mean that although the Fool seems foolish, taking a leap of faith may be the most sane thing they can do—and the ones who “criticize and sleep” are actually the fools.
What do you think of that song choice? What songs remind you of the Fool?
