Tarot Music Challenge: Nine of Pentacles

I am taking on a music challenge where I find songs that match the spirit of each of the 78 cards in the Tarot. For the Nine of Pentacles, I chose “The Glamorous Life” by Sheila E.

The Nine of Cups represents achieving a measure of abundance through hard work and perseverance. It is associated with being financially independent, perhaps through entrepreneurship or freelancing.

The traditional depiction of this card from the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot, in accordance with the gender norms of the day, shows a woman in a lush garden dressed in finery. Yet on the ground in front of her is a knight’s glove, suggesting that there is no man around and the woman is living on her own.

Similarly, “The Glamorous Life” is about a woman who has the finer things in life, but prefers to be on her own:

She wears a long fur coat of mink

Even in the summer time

Everybody knows from the coy little wink

The girl’s got a lot on her mind…

She wants to lead the glamorous life

She don’t need a man’s touch

She wants to lead the glamorous life

But without love, it ain’t much

Then, this woman meets a man who does not have a lot of money. They hook up, and their connection is much stronger than she thought it would be:

She thought real love is real scary

Money only pays the rent

Love is forever that’s all your life

Love is heaven sent…

What do you think of this song choice? What songs remind you of the Nine of Pentacles?
