The Crystal Power Tarot: Review

The Crystal Power Tarot is a lovely 78-card deck by Jayne Wallace (illustrated by Roberta Orpwood) published in 2019 by CICO Books. My love for healing crystals is one reason why I was drawn to this deck. Some of you may remember a while back when I dabbled in wire wrapping crystals for Ms. Joyce Pendants!

And indeed, Wallace’s interest in crystals was the inspiration for the Crystal Power Tarot. “I created this deck because crystals have always been my first love,” Wallace says in the guidebook. In this deck, each card is associated with a crystal based on its energetic properties.

Briefly, for those who are new to this concept, crystals are natural-occurring mineral formations found beneath the earth’s surface. Different crystals have different vibration frequencies that support spiritual growth when used with that intention. Different ways to attune yourself to the vibration of a crystal include wearing it as jewelry, holding it in your hand during mediation, carrying it in your wallet or purse, and placing it in various locations in your home or office workspace.

In the Crystal Power Tarot, each of the Major Arcana cards is associated with a different crystal, with the Tower card being assigned two crystals. The suits of the Minor Arcana are associated with two crystals each—one for the numbered cards and one for the court cards. As such, 31 crystals are represented in this deck. Many well-known crystals are included here, such as amethyst, citrine, bloodstone, red jasper, sodalite, and rose quartz. But there are a few rarer stones mentioned, too, including tanzanite and ghost quartz.

In addition to giving card meanings, the full-color guidebook has pictures of each card, the pictures of the stone associated with each card, and explanations of the crystal’s energetic properties, including the chakra it is associated with. For instance, the Lovers card is associated with rose quartz, which in turn is associated with Universal love and the heart chakra, The Fool card has seven stones pictured on that card, corresponding to the seven main chakras.

Some years ago, I reviewed another deck by Jayne Wallace, the Angel Tarot. Like that deck, the Crystal Power Tarot has keywords written on each card. These “Power Messages” are affirmations that can be used to reinforce the teachings on the cards pulled. I love her decks because of the care she puts into them by adding value beyond the traditional tarot card interpretations.

It also should be noted that similarly to the Angel Tarot, the numbered cards in the Crystal Power Tarot are pip cards, meaning that the images don’t provide clues to interpretations. But like in the earlier deck, the keywords help in that regard.

Between the well-written guidebook and power messages, someone with limited tarot experience can begin using these cards right away for readings if they so choose. However, this deck is also a delight for experienced readers versed in the Rider-Waite-Smith as the Crystal Power Tarot has the potential to deepen one’s understanding of the traditional interpretations.
