Ms. Joyce Tarot

I am taking on a music challenge where I find songs that match the spirit of each of the 78 cards in the Tarot. For the Hanged Man, I chose “A Flat” by Black Violin. Black Violin is a duo comprising classically trained instrumentalists Kev Marcus (violin) and Wil B (viola).

The Hanged Man, in part, is a card about letting go of expectations and assumptions in order to gain a new perspective. And in listening to A Flat Minor, one must let go of preconceived notions that hip hop and classical music are worlds apart.

In this original composition, hip hop and classical music mesh beautifully and seamlessly without sacrificing the sensibilities of either. Unfortunately, because of pervasive stereotypes in our society, it also may be an eye opener for some to learn that the highly-skilled musicians in this duo are Black Americans.
